Rye Harbour Nature Reserve has been included on a list of the top nudist beaches in the country. It came in at number three, following Brighton Naturist Beach and Studland Nudist Beach in Dorset, which both attract thousands of visitors going naked each year.

Travel website Kayak lists eleven locations where it says: “You can bare all – from the far north of the UK to the southernmost tip, there’s a huge range of stunning nude or naturist beaches that cater to those who want to get back to basics.”

The beach at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is described as a must-visit spot. “This beautiful naturist beach just a short stroll from Rye consists of small stones and pebbles and it’s backed by stunning sand dunes.”

Visitors to the beach on Monday July 7 were surprised by the news. “Really? I’ve never seen anyone naked here” or “I just come here to walk the dog and to see the birds” or “Are you sure? Where?”

The website’s research suggests looking towards Winchelsea Beach. “If you want to strip down and be at one with nature, the further west along the beach you travel, the more secluded the area is.”

It also lists the beach facilities as “parking, toilets, disabled access” but also has this warning for visitors, clothed or not: “Planning on taking a dip? Be aware that the Rother Estuary runs alongside part of the nature reserve which can cause riptides and strong currents.”

Perhaps they meant Fairlight Cove?

  1. I’m not gonna lie, I am no prude as I’ve worked in the adult industry but I don’t really want to see naked bodies along the coastline there !! They must of got it wrong or are they just suggesting secluded places ??? On a more serious note nudists should really stick to official nudist beaches because anyone who wants to “expose” themselves could do it under the guise of nudism. Which should concern everyone.

  2. Fairlight Glen was a nudist beach some years ago, not sure if it still is. There are no facilities on the beach as there’s a long walk to get to it. Used to be a favourite family outing in the 60’s.

    • Fairlight is still a nudist beach, but it’s become incredibly dangerous to get to. Personally I only ever used it for a peaceful swim. But rock fall has made the area too treacherous.

  3. The far end of camber Sands going towards the history up in the dunes you used to be able to be able to go nude, over the years the numbers have declined somewhat. I haven’t used it for two or three years. The next best nudist beach is at Normans Bay. This is actually recognised and is very busy.
But nowhere have I’ve seen it along the Winchelsea stretch obviously you have Fairlight Glen beach but that is such a walk up and down to the beach.
I would say Normans Bay beach would be the best one for ease of access. You can go by train and get off at Normans Bay walk to the beach turn left and keep walking along. If it’s a sunny day you will see where it is.. as for camber Sands though as I said it used to be very good people used to be up in the dunes minding their own business whilst thousands of holiday makers enjoyed the beach up at the Pontins end.
I might start going again the only thing I never liked was having to wait all day for the tide to come in to go for a swim and realising it’s not gonna get past my waist unless I walk another mile whereas Normans by the swimming is excellent.

  4. Yeuch! Another reason not to go there! If it’s not free range pooping dogs, it will probably be unattractive human specimens happily displaying their all and putting us right off our picnics. Give us a break!
