BID veto demand rejected

A proposal to veto plans for the controversial Business Improvement District in Rye has been rejected by Rother District Council’s cabinet, which met on Monday 2 February. Instead it voted to support the proposed BID and cast its eight votes in favour.

Around 290 Rye firms have until 12 February to take part in the ballot on the proposals. The controversial new levy is expected to raise £90,000 for town centre upgrades and tourist promotion annually over five years, if approved.

Monday’s meeting saw councillors discuss a demand from Kevin Cheesman from Lola and Sidney to cancel the BID process citing a failure to consult, disregarding complaints and what was described as the “significantly disproportionate and inequitable financial burden” the scheme placed on Rye’s small and medium-sized businesses.

RDC also received a briefing note from Mosaic Partnership, who have been advising Rye BID.

“The consultation has been done properly,” said Councillor Christine Bayliss, the cabinet member for economic development. “I absolutely support the proposal to cast our votes in favour. It’s a way of driving forward improvements in Rye.”

“This is very important for progress in Rye,” said Councillor Hazel Timpe. “I know we have received representations from various quarters who are not happy but this can only benefit Rye for residents and visitors. £90,000 will go a long way.”

The cabinet heard further representations had been made since the meeting’s agenda was published but councillors felt the concerns raised had already been answered by the briefing note.

The vote to support Rye BID was passed unanimously.

The postal ballot is being organised by Civica who provide election services for Rother District Council. Votes must be received by RDC by 12 February with the result announced the following day.
