A small field of poppies has been planted on a verge in Winchelsea in commemoration of those who fought in the Great War. The planting is part of a programme of acts of remembrance being organised and co-ordinated in Winchelsea by the Great War Commemoration Committee.
It is hoped to have a display of poppies each summer from now until at least 2018. However, as poppies are very difficult to cultivate, the committee is uncertain how the plan will turn out but is determined to pursue the project. As a spokesman for the committee said: “If it doesn’t work this year, we’ll try again next year. If it works this year, we’ll try to keep it going.”
