Martin Blincow, local cricket legend whose wife Judith, is proprietor at The Mermaid Inn, was hit for six last week when awarded not one, but two honours in recognition of his contribution over forty years to both Rye and to local cricket.
At a ceremony at the University of Warwick last week, Martin was presented with an award by the England and Wales Cricket Board recognising his outstanding contribution to coaching in Sussex.
Just a few days later Rye Town Council, after a unanimous vote in favour, welcomed Martin as an honorary freeman of Rye at a ceremony in the town hall.
Commenting on his status as a freeman of Rye, which comes with the privilege of being able to walk sheep through the town, Martin told Rye News: “My daughters have suggested that for Christmas they will buy me some sheep.”

Great news!
Martin Blincow deserves this
Well done Martin you have and still do so much for Rye Cricket club especially encouraging and supporting the younger members which as we know gives those a good all round grounding for the future plus all you do for Rye too!
Very many congratulations Martin. You have selflessly given so much to the great game and to Rye Cricket Club for all of those years. Your legendary status is synonymous with some giants of Rye and Sussex cricket of the past. Including Sid (Gus) Allnutt and Rick Merricks. Well done!
