Festivals, shanties and parking

It has been another fortnight of diverse and interesting activities.

Most importantly we had a Zoom meeting on Monday, August 8 of town councillors and residents regarding on street parking. Many people wrote in and took part – and we are very grateful to them for their insight. We have sent back our collective comments and hope that they will be listened to by East Sussex County Council.

Courtesy of the Reverend Fiona Gill, on Saturday, August 6 Anthony Kimber organised a meeting at Rye Baptist Church, for those hosting Ukrainian guests, to share best practice and update. We have 15 families staying in and around Rye and the villages. Later this month will be a Ukrainian Independence Day celebration at the Rye Community Centre.

We attended a music evening at Rye Rugby Club in aid of the Rye Hospital on Saturday, August 13, which was a pleasure. Their next big fundraising event is on Saturday,  September 3 – It’s a ChaRYEty Knockout, which promises to be a really fun event.

I’m grateful to all those who got back to me after the last update about the Iron Salts and whether it should be cut. I know many people enjoyed the wilding, but also many were pleased to see this cut back, not least because it was a fire risk.

I’ve chaired another meeting of the Sea Festival, which is on Sunday, September 11- there’s still time to get raft and tug of war entry forms in. We are grateful to Rye News, the Waterworks and Chapman’s Fisheries for prize monies towards these – and I’m also sponsoring the first prize in the raft race. Thank you also to Douglas Rowe Finance, GMP accountants, Chapman’s and the Mermaid Inn as our major sponsors. There are lots of costs involved in the festival and we couldn’t do it without these great sponsors – so a big thank you to them all.

Talking of festivals, a new committee is getting together to organise a Christmas event. They are looking at lots of ideas and we are grateful to all those who volunteer to make this happen, not least the new chair of the chamber of commerce, Jane Brook. I’m pleased to be able to help out by putting up the lights again with a group of great volunteers.

Talking to those who do such a great job collecting rubbish around the town, they have recommended a new type of bin that seems to work stopping seagulls pulling out rubbish. There is one by the Heritage Centre. Let’s hope RDC recognise this when ordering some more.

I’ve been out again working with our harbour master, an unsung hero of the town who looks out for all our seafaring visitors and locals in the port and bay of Rye. We’ve had several big ships in and out.

Rebekah and I have been singing shanties again, firstly in the Waterworks on Wednesday, August 3 – where the landlord, Dave collected £100 from those listening, in aid of the RNLI – then again at our local highly successful Charles Palmer vineyard for a Sunday audience. We are back there again on Sunday, August 28.

I hope everyone has had a good August so far and I look forward to reporting back soon.
