In last week’s Rye News we brought you the story of Giles Moffatt from Peasmarsh and his climb to the top of Mount Everest, which began last week. He is part of Team Uprising, raising money for the NSPCC, the charity that helps vulnerable children. As Giles explained before leaving for Nepal, he is being joined on his climb by some of the other victims of abuse suffered at Edinburgh Academy when they were schoolboys.

Gilles and the team flew out to Kathmandu on Easter Saturday, and he has now started sending updates and photos to Rye News as their climb begins.

At 3500m

They have now had their first view of Everest. Giles says it may look near, but the climb is much further. “We could just see the top of Mount Everest, it’s the cloud plume to the right of the summit in the photo. Incredible. All is going well.”

Before flying out to the mountains from Kathmandu, the team posed for photographs and took a picture that shows their route to the top. They are now at 3,500m. Everest is 8,848m high.

  1. Incredible undertaking for what must be a huge challenge. Wishing Giles and the team a safe and steady ascent in good weather. Look forward to progress updates.

  2. It costs a minimum of about £35,000 to climb Mount Everest, so how much money are they hoping to raise for the NSPCC?

    • If you click on their link Robin it says their target is £100k. They are almost at halfway to that over all sum now and our local hero, Giles has raised over £12K of that already.
