For the love of fire and the community

Shortly after midday, on an unusually sunny bank holiday Monday, the normal hubbub of Rye was suddenly shattered by the rousing beat of Ryebellion Drummers. Rye Bonfire Society were having a party!

The drummers got the festivities off to a loud and rhythmic start. Dressed in their
trademark black and red they were a sight to behold. And, sounded fantastic! Ruth Sperring had kindly agreed for this community engaging shindig to be held in the beer garden of the Cinque Ports pub and the venue was spot on, right in the centre of town.

Little Big Stone

Local band, Little Big Stone, set up in the wooden pagoda and provided fabulous music that had the assembled guests dancing from their first song.

Tatners pop-up food van was a massive hit and the food was delicious. Once glasses (and tummies) were full it was time for some torch making.

Mayor Andy Stuart with Craig McCarthy

Rye Bonfire Society torch captain, Craig McCarthy, was on hand to show society members, and game members of the public how it’s done. Even mayor, Councillor Andy Stuart had a go! Torches could also be signed and the mayor’s torch will be auctioned off at the Bonfire Society’s auction of promises on Wednesday, July 2, alongside Rye Fawkes, and will be cast to light the bonfire on November 15.

Bonfire society members were able to renew their membership and collect their 2025 badges, there was also the chance to find out from Rye Bonfire Society’s chairman, James Foster, and Emma Moon, membership captain, about joining.

Rye Bonfire Society hope that this event gave the community the chance to see what they do when they’re not burning boats! And, would like to thank everyone who helped organise the event, and came along to support it.

A flaming marvellous afternoon was definitely had by everyone involved!
