Great news for all the fresh fish fans – after months of refurbishment, Rye has a brand new fish retail shop that is open to the public. Based at Simmons Quay, on the site of the old Market Fisheries shop, Chapman’s Fish has opened Rye Fish Market.
Since Brexit, Chapman’s has been busy working with the Rye fishermen to develop an export hub at its site on Simmons Quay. Our fishermen have fished here for generations, going to sea for just 12 hours at a time in small boats – often single-handed on deck. And a route to export is vital for their survival.
“We are proud to be able to support our local fishing industry. Opening the retail shop will enable us to keep even more of our fish in the UK, providing fantastic quality local fish to local people. This will both ensure better prices for our fishermen and increase the sustainability of our fishing fleet,” says Keith Chapman, joint owner of Rye Fish Market.
Along with fresh fish straight from our local boats, Rye Fish Market has a full range of fresh and frozen fish and seafood, including fresh lobsters from their own lobster tanks, which you can see in the shop. You may also recognise many of the staff – all locals, including the team from the previous shop.
Keep an eye out for the grand opening event, planned for June, but the shop is now open to the public 9am – 3pm every day except Sunday, including Good Friday and Easter Monday.
