This year, Rye’s traditional Throwing of the Hot Pennies will take place next Monday May 7, outside the 18th-century Town Hall in Market Street by St Mary’s Norman Church at the top of the historic Citadel at 12.30pm.
The ceremony is part of Rye’s annual Mayor Making when the newly elected Mayor throws hot new pennies from the Council Chamber to children waiting below in Market Street.
The Mayor Making meeting will commence at 11am and it is expected that the current Deputy Mayor, Councillor Michael Boyd will take over the Mayoralty from Councillor Jonathan Breeds.
Members of the Cinque Ports Volunteers in historic costumes will be stationed outside the Town Hall to ensure that the scrabbling for pennies does not become too unruly!
[Editor’s note: The council will be in full gear (tricorn and bicorn hats, black gowns and white gloves) and will process to St Mary’s for the Civic Service around 11.45 and the Mayor’s Luncheon will follow at the Mermaid Inn in Mermaid Street around 1.15pm after the hot pennies have been thrown. Guests from other Cinque Ports may also be colourfully dressed]
