This year’s Sussex Heritage Awards, were held on Wednesday November 25, as previewed in last week’s issue.

Two of the award winners featured the design work of RX Architects Ltd,  whose studio is at the Creative Centre in New Road, Rye. This architecture practice, led by Derek Rankin and Bob Pollard, gained two Sussex Heritage Trust awards in 2019, with new-build houses at Suttons, Camber and at Bixley Lane, Beckley.

The firm is also responsible for the Bridgepoint development at Rock Channel, Rye, which won planning approval earlier this year.

Druim Beach House – view from the Reserve

Among this year’s winners were Druim Beach House, Winchelsea Beach, in the Small Scale Residential category and Tillingham Winery, at Dew Lane, Peasmarsh in the Commercial category, both designed by RX Architects.

Druim Beach House represents the re-modelling of an existing unfinished detached house and expansion of the living accommodation, whilst maximising the light and open views across Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and beyond to the sea.

Tillingham Winery

The Tillingham Winery project was to restore a traditional 19th century Oast and farm buildings to facilitate organic wine production from its 70 acre vineyard.

  1. I have yet to find an Architect capable of doing “Picturesque”.
If a design is not picturesque, it has negative impact.
The essence of “Picturesque” is irregularity.
The more rectangular an architectural design , the worse and the lazier the Architect.
