The new dropped kerbs in the High Street and in Lion Street outside the Kino were officially opened by Dan Lake on Friday 21 November, having been installed by East Sussex Highways. Dan, who has led a year-long campaign to improve accessibility for those of limited mobility, was accompanied by Hastings and Rye MP Helena Dollimore, Rye Mayor Andy Stuart and Councillors Mike Boyd and Simon McGurk, who have actively supported his campaign.

Dan is really pleased that Rye High Street has finally got some dropped kerbs. “This is just the start of things to come. I still think there are places in the High Street that could do with dropped kerbs being installed. The pathways all over Rye are something that really need looking at and this is something I would like to work on improving. I know it won’t be easy but if you don’t try you will never know if it’s possible.

“I am still working towards creating a disabled group that could put pressure on councils to improve Rye.”

The dropped kerbs were welcomed by local resident, Sandra Lanigan. “The parents and grandparents with children in push-chairs and those of us who belong to the shopping-trolley brigade also welcome these dropped kerbs.”

There are now sloped kerbs at the corner of Market Road outside Jempson’s cafe and the corner of the High Street and Lion Street. It is hoped that there will be improved access to the pavements outside the toilets opposite the station and at the corner of Market Street and Lion Street at Concepts corner.

If you would like to get involved in setting up a Rye Disability Action Group to continue the work to improve the pathways, install more dropped kerbs and find ways to improve access for wheelchair and mobility scooter users, contact Dan Lake on 07584 435732 or email daniellake8@hotmail.com.
