Elizabeth Smith from Winchelsea Beach, who traded as Waves Estates at 60 Cinque Ports Street, has pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to defrauding an 80 year-old pensioner out of £160,000.

The court heard that between May 2018 and March 2019 she defrauded the woman by telling her the money would be used for a property purchase, instead Smith kept the money for her own use.

At Lewes earlier this week the court was told that the offending was aggravated by the victim’s age.

Smith’s defence barrister argued that Smith, who is suffering from terminal stomach cancer, anxiety and depression, should be released on bail. The Recorder remanded Smith in custody and also ordered a pre-sentence report.

Sentencing is due to take place on Tuesday, September 21.

  1. The sentence will hopefully reflect the crime and suffering this person caused on an elderly lady but I suspect it won’t.
What I would be interested to know is whether the lady will get her money back or not, once again I suppose not.
