The Mariners Coterie tearooms in the High Street will be closed all day this Friday, March 19. This is to enable staff to attend an awards ceremony at the Rare Breeds Centre at Woodchurch, near Ashford.

At that ceremony City and Guilds Food Safety Certificates will be handed out to successful NVQ entry and level 1 students.

The Mariners and the residential care accommodation in Watchbell Street are both owned by the Canterbury Oast Trust, a charity supporting people with learning disabilities in Kent and East Sussex.

Sharon Finch, the manager at the Mariners, told me that 25 members will be attending from Rye. They will be among some 75 individual students receiving awards on that occasion, presented by Celia Hadfield, the chairman of trustees.
