Aldi update

Aldi proposals in Rye

It’s now over three months since planning permission was granted for the new Aldi supermarket on Winchelsea Road – a three part development which also includes homes and retirement houses.

A spokesperson for Aldi gave this update on Thursday 21 May, “The team are waiting on completion of the three Section 106 Agreements. The terms of which are now agreed and are in the process of circulation for signature by the various parties.”

A Section 106 Agreement is a contract which commits developers to agreed conditions before building work can start. In the case of Aldi these include: commitments on employment and bio-diversity, supporting bus services, two hours free parking, and improvements on the walk to Rye town centre.

The proposed development would involve the demolition of an existing property in Main Street — known as The Garden House — with a new access road to be built in its place.
