Work to complete essential maintenance on the pool surround tiles is taking place as a spokesperson for the centre explained. “We hoped to complete this without closing the pool, but unfortunately this was not possible. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.”

The pool will be open as usual from 7:30am on Monday, May 12.

On the agenda

Rye Town Hall

Rye Town Council meets on Monday, May 12. The discussions at the town hall begin at 6:30pm and the meeting is open to the public. The agenda includes an update on Rye Leisure Centre and the make up of the council’s committees and steering groups.

Deer warning

Drivers in East Sussex are being urged to be ‘deer aware’ this spring to avoid collisions on the county’s roads.

The risk of encountering the animals increases in May when young deer are born. Cllr Claire Dowling, the county council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “Collisions with deer can result in injury or death for animals and drivers, and significant damage to vehicles. Deer often travel in groups so if drivers see one crossing the road they should slow down and drive with caution as others may follow.”

More information and advice is available on the Deer Aware page on the council’s website.

VE Day 80

As Rye News goes to press, events have been taking place to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday, May 8.

In Rye, the VE Day 80 flag was raised at St Mary’s at 9am accompanied by a special cry from town crier Paul Goring. Rye Town Hall was the focus of events at lunchtime, with songs, speeches and prayers.

Marking the end of the war in Europe in 1945, the day’s events also included bell-ringing and the lighting of beacons across the UK – including on Udimore Road in Rye.

Rye News will have a full report on the day’s events next week.

Well done to Rebecca Bartlett who won the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve spring photograph competition with this picture of a little egret.
