Safety at sea

It was a busy weekend for the Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat with a number of calls for help and a church service to celebrate the work of the charity.

On Saturday 11 July the lifeboat was called to assist three people on a paddleboard struggling with the tide and the wind whilst on the way to reports of an upturned kayak off St Leonards. The paddleboarders were escorted back to shore, whilst the kayak turned out to be a false alarm. The crew were also called to a number of incidents which were quickly stood down.

The next day, on Sunday 12 July, a woman with a suspected ankle injury was rescued from the cliffs between Fairlight and Hastings. The call from UK Coastguard came in at 8.38pm and led to two walkers being transferred to the rescue boat and brought back to the slip at Pett Level. Welfare checks, towels and hot drinks were provided.

PLIRB Sea Sunday service

Earlier on Sunday the annual Sea Sunday service, organised by the united Christian churches in Pett, saw volunteers from the lifeboat and the local community reflect on life beside and on the sea. The well-attended service was held in the newly built PLIRB boathouse, purpose designed to house the boat and all supporting equipment in a single location.

The entirely voluntary organisation is currently in a major fundraising process to replace their 12-year-old lifeboat, which needs to be retired in 2027. Further information is available here.
