Last Sunday, January 17 was an eventful day in Camber, for not only were the residents in the Whitesands development without a water supply for most of the day, due to a burst water main, but there was also a ‘police incident’ in Camber involving an unexploded device.
The device was discovered in a remote field, well away from the general public, and the explosive ordnance team were contacted and arrived at the scene to assess the situation. The police later confirmed that the ‘live’ device had been left in situ and a controlled explosion was then safely carried out by the explosive ordnance team.
[Editor’s note: No information has yet become available about what the device was, but Army ranges are nearby and in 1944 hundreds of guns were massed along the coast to try and shoot down the “doodlebugs” (a pilotless aircraft which was probably an early form of cruise missile) launched from Holland by the Germans after the D-day invasion of Europe.]
