Last Saturday saw many events across Europe including cities like London, Glasgow, Paris and Madrid in support of refugees. A group of Rye residents met for a vigil outside Rye Town Hall, to show their concern for the plight of Syrian refugees currently trying to escape civil war and make a new life for their children in Europe, writes Matt Follett.

Bearing the message “refugees welcome” a multi-generational group (pictured above) of concerned residents, young and old alike, gathered to show their support.

Organiser Jack Ash (second from left in photo) said : “I’m so pleased people came out to show how they feel about this desperate situation that many refugees face, and I’d also like to thank those who dropped off donations with us, which we took to the refugee donation centre at the Borough Arms.

“We all know how lucky we are to be living in a place like Rye and so we thought it right and proper to demonstrate our tolerance and sympathy with those less fortunate than ourselves at this time of crisis in Syria and Europe”
