On Sunday, January 26, Rye Cricket Club held its annual general meeting at which the committee was elected and the development plan was presented as the club takes on responsibility for the maintenance of the cricket square and outfield.

The on-field plans saw Harry Smeed re-elected as club skipper, and Fin Thomson as the vice-captain. The club is busy recruiting new players for the forthcoming season, with two overseas players lined up to join the club in April, and new members who will be involved in the indoor nets which start on Friday, February 28 at Claremont School in Bodiam 7pm-8:30pm. There are four net lanes available and all those playing in the Saturday league teams will be invited.

The junior season begins on Wednesday, March 5 at Rye Sports Centre. 6pm-7pm for boys and girls aged under 11, and 7pm-8pm for under 13s. The under 16s will be involved in senior nets on Fridays from February 28.

Signing on night for the season is on Friday, April 25 at 7pm in the pavilion, with the summer coaching programme starting on Wednesday April 30 6pm-8pm for under 13s and under 13s hardball. The under 16s will be involved on Friday nights 6pm-8pm with the seniors at the Salts.

We start our national softball programme of All Stars 7-9 years old and Cricket Dynamos 10-12 years old on Sunday, May 11 at 10am and 11am. Shortly, the ECB will launch a website to book places on these programmes.

There will be a challenge this year as the club takes on maintaining the Salts. The club has signed a licence with Rother outlining the new responsibilities. The club has now acquired new financial responsibilities for the cutting of the outfield grass, consumables such as loam, end of season renovations, and the maintenance of sheds and the irrigation system.

Along with the costs of the pavilion, the club will be more active than ever in seeking sponsorship and support. We are greatly appreciative of the support we received last year from Rush Witt & Wilson, Diamond Koz, Bournes Moves, Skinners of Rye, the George in Rye, the Mermaid Inn, Jempson’s, Mahdi Lounge, Parker Building Supplies, Marinos, Peter Farrow Jewellers, Rye Bay Fitness, and Khanz.

This year the support we receive will be directed at maintaining the community asset of the Rye Cricket Salts.

To get involved as a senior player, as a junior player, or as a sponsor please contact Martin Blincow – blincsfamily@aol.com / 07535482006 We look forward to making the most of the new opportunities afforded to Rye Cricket Club.
