When a team loses by 117 runs you might think what a shocking result. However Rye 1sts returned from division leaders Bolney on Saturday more than satisfied. Despite losing they gained the maximum of 15 bonus points. Bolney had enjoyed a run feast amassing 421 runs. However Rye had taken all 10 wickets, at some cost, on a small ground and with players of a certain class, including Rohit Jagota who hit 156, and a total tally of 20 sixes in the innings. Harry Smeed 3-99 and Fin Thomson 4-95 bearing the brunt of the onslaught.
Undaunted, Rye also took advantage of the small ground scoring 304-5. Hugh Neelson-Smith scored a century, Fin Thomson 60, Sharukh Khan 58 and Luke Payton 46. This Saturday Rye 1sts host Lindfield 1sts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera in the knowledge they are 3rd in Division 3 East, after a very positive start to the season.
The 2nds secured a win in the local derby versus Iden, who at the start of the day topped Division 7 East. Iden won the toss and elected to bat. Rye’s bowlers never let the Iden batters get into their stride. Freddie Mackenzie with 0-9 off 8 overs and James Archer 2-22 off 7 overs. Stand in skipper Martin Blincow chipped in with 2-34, thus leaving Iden having to push the score on. However Ross Pierce with 4-6 and George Channon 1-17 ensured Iden posted only 136 all out.
In reply Mark Cook with 30 provided a foundation for the Rye innings but at 89-5 there was a wobble. But 17 year old Tom O’Neill played his most mature innings yet as his 42 not out steered Rye to a fourth win of the season, and 4th place in the division only 2 points off 2nd place. This Saturday Rye 2nds travel to play Crowborough 1sts.
The 3rds remain 2nd in Division 12 East after a comprehensive 9 wicket win over Little Common Ramblers 4ths. Ramblers were dismissed for 91. Youngsters Bast Bowley, Ollie Balcomb and Charley Prentice took 5 wickets, and then the oldies Neil Archer 3-19 and Turan Hassan 2-16 finished off the innings. Rye raced past the 91 target with Turan Hassan 42 not out and Samuel Bradnum 28 not out. This Saturday the 3rds host the Ramblers in the return fixture at Icklesham.
The youngsters too have continued the positive start to the season. The U13s defeated Boughton by 8 wickets. Boughton scored 110-4 in 20 overs. Rye went past the finishing post in the 12th over. Soul Summers 33 retired and Bertie Furnival 28 led the charge with the bat.
On Monday evening it was a double celebration as Rye U11A and B recorded victories. The U11A beat Tenterden B by 60 runs. Ollie Bateman 4-8 and Luke Rogers 3-4 did the damage with the ball and Luke Rogers 22 and George Smith 15 saw Rye home. That makes the U11A undefeated after 6 matches.
The U11B beat WyeB by 34 runs. A good team performance with Fergus Cooke hitting 30 the stand out performance. Next week on Monday the U11a travel to Egerton and the U11b host Mersham. On Thursday the undefeated Under 13s travel to play Tenterden who are also undefeated.
