After the two close games in the first week of the Sussex Cricket League, last Saturday, May 18 Rye recorded two wins, characterised by good controlled bowling and efficient batting.
Rye 1st XI travelled to Glynde where the hosts chose to bat first. Glynde got away to a positive start as Joe Adams hit 66 and Tom Silvester 30, as Glynde reached 116-2. The introduction of Shahrukh Khan 4-45 and Luke Payton 4-38 ensure Rye took back control of the game as Glynde were dismissed for 182 in the 38th over.
Rye then posted an opening partnership of 93 as Ruben Collingwood hit 87 off 90 balls and James Hamilton 32. There was a slight wobble as Rye lost 3 cheap wickets, but Luke Payton 47 no off 30 balls, 6 4s and 3 6s ensured Rye went past the target in the 36th over to win by 5 wickets.

Rye 2nds hosted promotion favourites Little Common Ramblers 2nds in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn. Rye won the toss and invited the Ramblers to bat. Right from the start Rye’s bowlers exerted control. Only 51 runs were scored off the first 16 overs. The introduction of Ross Pierce saw wickets fall as he took 3-18, and 17 year old Matthew Best 2-42. Martin Blincow chipped in with 2-38 as the Ramblers reached 163-7 off their 40 overs.
Rye started on the front foot as Ellis Hatter hit 41 and Spencer Fielding 22. Mark Cook with 21 was supported by Harvey Otto 34, and Rye moved to 144-4 and the target was reached as Jack Barras hit a quick fire 14. This Saturday Rye 1st XI host Cuckfield 2nd XI in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera, whilst the 2nds travel to play Eastbourne 3rd XI. The 3rd XI get their season underway visiting Sidley 2nd XI.

The juniors take a break next week due to half term, but on Thursday an U12 team host Merstham from Surrey in a game starting at 2pm. This last week the U11a team made it 3 wins from 3 as they beat Wye. Luke Rogers and George Smith excelled with the bat and all 8 players bowled and were exceptional as a group, bowling only 3 wides. The U11b team lost at Boughton U11, but with the team averaging only eight years of age their performance was outstanding and are quickly developing.
Last Thursday the U13s beat Great Chart by 25 runs. Rye posted 153 all out in the 20th over. Soul Summer 41 the stand out with the bat, sharing a 48 run partnership with Alex Welch. In reply Great Chart scored 128-8. Charlie Cooke and Louis Young both bagged a couple of wickets.
