After over two years of hard work by Rye Recreation & Wellbeing Community Interest Organisation (CIO), East Sussex County Council, Rother District Council and Freedom Leisure, an agreement is in the final stages of development to allow the CIO to take over the running of the facility.
A meeting will be held to update the public on latest developments. This is an open meeting for anyone interested, it will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 1pm – 2pm at Rye Sports Centre.
Current facilities and clubs
Current facilities and clubs are operating as usual throughout this process, with some exciting additions and improvements in the pipeline. More information will be released over the coming weeks.
Councillor Rebekah Gilbert of Rye Town Council and trustee of the CIO said: “We hope to take over very soon, and sometimes we have questioned our sanity on some of the darker days along what has been a long and hard road so far. If we knew then what we knew now would we have still done it? Of course! This is such a valuable centre for all of our community, young and old, which is why we took up the challenge to take it over. And it’s all been worth it, because in a town like Rye community is everything”.
Daniel Lynn, who co-authored the original feasibility study for the transition from Freedom Leisure to the Rye-based CIO said: “It’s such an exciting time for leisure in Rye and its surrounding areas – bringing the leisure centre into local management and creating a sustainable leisure facility for the local community and future generations.”
