Ryebellion Drummers warmed up the throng gathered outside the town hall in Rye on Monday, June 15 for the celebrations of Sussex Day, and although they played their favourites they threw a new number into the mix which was well received. Town crier Paul Goring and Arabella, his deputy, welcomed both Rye residents and many visitors to the town.

This video captures the warm atmosphere and showcases Isabel Ryan, Cllr John Breeds and Martin Bruce reading from poems about Sussex, with Paul Goring continuing the theme in local dialect with a humorous excerpt from Sussex wunt be druv by W Victor Cooke which made everyone smile.

“We wunt be druv” is the unofficial county motto of Sussex in southern England. It is a Sussex dialect phrase meaning “We will not be driven”. The motto asserts that people from the English county of Sussex have minds of their own and cannot be forced to act against their will or be told what to do.

The video continues with the rector reading the prayer of St Richard of Chichester, patron saint of Sussex, followed by a blessing.

The event concluded with Cllr Rebekah Gilbert leading communal singing of Sussex by the Sea. Paul Goring reminded everyone that communal singing means that everyone should join in.

Well done, Paul Goring, for organising such an important event in the life of Rye and Sussex.

I had an assistant photographer working alongside me, Finn Givens who proved to be very helpful and had a natural style.
