On Saturday, August 9 Rye’s cobbled streets were awash with pirates, smugglers, drummers and revellers when our ‘antient’ town held its inaugural Pirates and Smugglers Day which was a roaring success.

After a cry from Paul Goring, Rye’s town crier, and a welcome from Mayor ‘Lamb’ (our own Cllr Andy Stuart) – along with dire threats of the prosecution of any misbehaving rogues  – a huge parade took to the streets of Rye. This video gives a flavour of the day.

There were stalls on the Strand, street performances, children’s events, shanty singing from the Rye Harbour Herrings on the streets of Rye, and lots of music in the pubs. The shops had decorated their windows and the winner of the best decorated competition was the Sunflower Charity Shop. Pirate Belle entertained children at Ethel Loves Me, reading stories by Oliver Brooks.

The day was such a success that the organisers, Matt, Zoe and Gary, are already planning next year’s event.

Congratulations to all who took part, the businesses who sponsored the event and the crowds who came to support and dressed for the occasion.
