The future of our food

Cherry Barn at Clayton Farm in Peasmarsh is no stranger to important visitors, it is after all a hugely popular wedding venue, occupying a box seat location, in total seclusion and surrounded by countryside with outstanding views on all sides.

What better venue to hold an open meeting on food production and food security where the Environment Secretary, Steve Barclay, reiterated that Britain must treat supplying food to our population as a “fundamental part of national security” and that food security be given the highest priority following the impact of the pandemic and war in Ukraine.

The Rt Hon Steve Barclay MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was joined on his campaign trail by Hugh Broom, farmer and former presenter of the Farmers’ Weekly Podcast and Huw Merriman MP for Bexhill and Battle and Minister of State for Transport. Sally-Ann Hart MP for Hastings and Rye chaired the discussion and subsequent Q and A session.

The event was very well attended with many well-known faces from the agricultural, farming, wine and food production sectors as well as environmentalists and specialists involved in the food production chain. Serious concerns were raised including whether the Environment Agency is fit for purpose; what is the future and functionality of abattoirs following the recent closure of the facility at Tottingworth Farm; the effect that flooding and pesticides used in farming and food production is having on the environment and vineyards; and how goods and produce is being stolen from supermarkets following an unprecedented rise in theft and shoplifting.

The evening was a fascinating insight into so many different issues that are being taken very seriously by farmers and ministers alike. A concerning time for all involved and a lot of work to do but with more effective communication between the parties involved, progress could be made.

Mr Barclay commented: “What’s very clear to me is when there is pressure on our supply chain, the cost goes up significantly. There is nothing more essential to our national security than ensuring that we can maintain our food supply.
