The positive power of social media – Rye comes to musician’s rescue

Demonstrating the strength of Rye’s community spirit is a story that unfolded on Facebook over the weekend.

Jordan Andrew Evans, a DJ and techno producer, travelled from the West Midlands on Thursday, January 16 to visit a friend in Rye. They went out for a few drinks “on an empty stomach” and so it wasn’t until the next morning that Jordan realised that he could not find the backpack that he had travelled with. What made this discovery so awful was that along with some clothes, it contained Jordan’s laptop, which had on it all the music for his upcoming album release, his headphones and a GoPro camera.

In a desperate bid to find the backpack, Jordan posted on the Rye and Winchelsea Community Chat page on Facebook giving details of the contents and a photograph of him wearing it, which was quickly shared and helpful suggestions offered up in the comments.

After checking back with staff at the Pipemakers Arms, who saw him leaving with the backpack, Jordan retraced what he could remember of his walk back to his friend’s house. “My friend had gone home before me, and I couldn’t quite remember where he lived so was wandering around. The next day I went into the Old Borough Arms on the Strand who had CCTV of me walking the wrong way but still with the backpack.”

Then on Saturday, Jordan received the message that he had been hoping for – the backpack had been found by Daniel Lynn and his six-year-old daughter, Georgie. “We were walking the dog along Strand Quay and Georgie likes to walk along the top of the wall there. As we got towards the bridge at the end, Georgie saw the bag tucked into the wall. I leant over and saw it but we left it as Georgie thought it might belong to someone homeless who had left it there.

“When I got home, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw Jordan’s post and immediately recognised the bag as it had quite distinctive water bottle and cup on the outside. Knowing what was inside and how I’d feel if I had lost my laptop and all it contained, I went back to collect it. I saw that it still had all the contents and then messaged Jordan and handed it over to him over coffee on Sunday. Georgie feels very good about finding it, and the fact that it could be found and returned shows us how social media can be used in a positive way.”

Jordan is incredibly grateful to Georgie for spotting the missing bag and for all the local interest and concern shown by the people of Rye. He has one song for his album to finish, with an uplifting and warm vibe. “As a massive thank you to Daniel’s amazing little girl I will be naming this last track after her.”

Daniel, of course, is extremely proud of Georgie whose observant curiosity helped to reunite Jordan with his bag, and his music.

And as a huge thank you to the people of Rye, Jordan hopes to host a party in July, DJing with his son. “Anyone in Rye is more than welcome to come; the backpack, laptop, headphones and GoPro will also make an appearance!”

Jordan’s album with his track Georgie, will be released on Friday, January 24. You can listen to Georgie here.
