On Thursday 7 May, voters in and around Rye will be able to elect representatives to both East Sussex County Council and Rother District Council. These are the bodies that make decisions affecting everyday life in our town — from roads and social care to planning, housing and waste collection.
Local government across East Sussex is in the middle of significant upheaval. Plans are well advanced to replace the current two-tier system of county and district councils with a single new “unitary” authority, and the shape of local government will look rather different by the end of the decade. The councillors elected in May will serve through this transition — which makes choosing the right people all the more important, not less.
Whoever is elected will be in the room when critical decisions are made about how services are redesigned, how local communities like Rye are represented within a much larger authority, and how planning and housing pressures across the area are managed in the meantime.
The good news for Rye is that town and parish councils are expected to continue and may even take on a more prominent role as the reorganisation takes shape. The government has repeatedly stated its commitment to local decision-making at the community level, and Rye Town Council — which looks after so much of what makes Rye the place it is — should remain a vital and enduring part of that picture.
That said, the relationship between the town council and whatever new authority emerges will need scrutiny. It will matter enormously that Rye has strong, engaged voices at the county and district level during this period, to make sure the town’s interests are not overlooked in the larger conversation about what comes next.
This is precisely the kind of moment when local elections really count. The people elected on 7 May will not just be filling seats — they will be helping to shape the future of how our area is governed for a generation.
Polls are open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday 7 May. Don’t forget to bring a valid form of photo ID..
Rye’s voice matters. Make sure it’s heard.
Next week in Rye News we’ll be hearing from all the candidates in both the Rye and Eastern Rother ward on East Sussex County Council, and the Rye and Winchelsea ward for Rother District Council.
