A van full of sunshine for Ukraine

Malcolm Maynard has been to Ukraine with a van full of supplies for those struggling in a war-torn country many times now. What is remarkable about this kind, hard-working and generous man is that, although he is in his 70s and he has had major surgery this year, nothing deters him.

He is setting off again on Tuesday, August 15 at 2am in company with Shane Williams in a van packed to the gunnels with clothes, pushchairs, highchairs and lots of comfort boxes made by two local ladies. These boxes are packed with love and caring, containing sweets, chocolate bars, little teddies and colouring books and crayons. They are intended to bring comfort and joy into the lives of little ones who have lost so much. The ladies also make comfort boxes for the soldiers, who look forward to them being delivered.

The journey is long and arduous but Malcolm and Shane just take it all in their stride. Malcolm was very touched recently when Tony from Rhys Construction offered to fund his ferry journeys and this helps a great deal.

Malcolm commented, “I am all ready for my next trip to Ukraine, leaving early hours Tuesday. We have about one hundred and forty boxes of toys as well as clothes, pushchairs and shoes: the van is almost solid. I would like to thank everyone for all the donations that have been given to us. I’m out there for about ten days, going a lot further east this time then back for three days before my next trip when I will be delivering generators, medical supplies, etc.

“I am looking for people to donate funds to help with fuel ferry costs for our next trip. Any help would be gratefully received as each trip costs about £1,200. Thank you. Please contact me malcolmmaynard@gmail.com. The joy on the little children’s faces (and the adults’, too) makes it all worthwhile. Be part of my story because it makes a difference.”
