From 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, July 8 we celebrate the working women of Rye who took part in the first stage of the HerStory living oral history archive.

You’ll have a glimpse of some of the 125 portraits and 55 stories we have recorded in our first year for this unique archive to be officially launched 13 days later on July 21 at the Rye Heritage Centre in Strand Quay. By then, a series of portraits will be appearing on buildings around town, and our website will become available for students, historians and visitors to Rye.

Do come with your families to hear more about the future development of this unique living archive. Please bring your family photographs and stories with you of mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers who have worked in Rye, past and present, to share memories and add to our collection.

We would love to meet anyone interested in recording oral histories, especially students interested in the rich variety of jobs women do in our town. In developing the HerStory project in the year ahead we can also offer professional training in oral history recording techniques to anyone interested in joining us.

We have so enjoyed interviewing so many of you and this tea party is our way of saying thank you to you, to our hosts, the Rye Heritage Center and sponsors, the Heritage Lottery Fund.
