Rye and District Camera Club was established in 1956 and has been going strong ever since. The club meets every second Monday from September to April, moving this season to Iden Village Hall. The meetings are divided between guest speakers, practical demonstrations and competition nights.
Jane Howard, chair of the RDCC, explains: “The club is thriving. We are a friendly group, always happy to welcome new members with an interest in photography. Our club evenings are varied, hosting a range of speakers, our next being David Jenner on February 3, as well as club competitions in which members are invited to enter their work, both for constructive suggestions on how to improve and for appreciation of their accomplishments.
“We hold six competition evenings per season, with invited judges helping to select the winners of our trophies. Our trophies commemorate respected past members, for example the George Delamare Trophy for the best digital image of the British countryside and the Roy Stubbs Trophy for monochrome prints.
“The standard of our club photography ranges from very accomplished, entered for competitions around the world, to beginners. It is during the tea-break that you will see everyone mixing, discussing their photography and supporting each other to learn and improve: there will be plenty of laughter and chatter!
“Have a look at our website www.rdcc.co.uk and follow us on Facebook. We look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy our sharing our winning photos with you on Rye News.”
Tony Ham, a member of the club and winner of competitions, said: “There is no pressure to enter competitions but having a judge point out what they think is right and wrong in your pictures is a great way to improve your photography. I have found this particularly helpful.
“These competitions are either on a theme or open. The last two meetings of the season are the end of year competitions in which members enter the favourite pictures they’ve entered into competitions over the year, followed by the AGM at which we pay our membership for the following season and are given the programme so we know what’s coming up. It is very useful having advance notice of the subjects of the upcoming competitions; this is followed by the presentation of trophies and certificates to those who won during the season.”
