There will be more dropped kerbs to help improve access for people with mobility issues in Rye, thanks to campaigners who took part in this May’s protest day.

Organisers Dan Lake from the Tilling Green Residents Association and Cllr Si McGurk,
Rother District Councillor for Rye and Winchelsea, have this update on what has happened since the Rye Mobility Awareness Day.

The initiative, which is spearheaded by Dan, aims to improve accessibility and safety for all residents.

We are pleased to report that following a series of meetings which we organised with East Sussex Highways officers, several locations have been provisionally approved for the installation of dropped kerbs – subject to further suitability checks.

These locations include:

  • Outside Rye Station car park public toilets
  • High Street / Market Street
  • Market Road, outside Jempson’s café
  • Opposite W J Bennet and Byzantium
  • Corner of Lion Street outside Concept store
  • High Street / Lion Street – corner of Lion Street and Market Street

This project is a significant move towards making our community more accessible and pedestrian-friendly. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of everyone involved, especially everyone who took part in the awareness raising day. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Helena Dollimore, our local MP, for her continued support and advocacy on this matter. Her involvement and correspondence has been instrumental in moving this project forward and receiving confirmation from ESCC of the current state of play.

We will continue to keep the community updated on the progress of this initiative and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our town.

  1. Well done Dan for leading a great campaign with real results. Let’s hope ESCC actually delivers these improvements (delivery not being their strong point).
