Rain rain everywhere!

It seems all the missing rainfall has come at once. Saturday saw the 2nds and 3rds washed away and the 1sts wishing their game had been as well.

Rye hosted Glynde 1sts in a match sponsored by My Sweet Old Etcetera. The club had put the covers on overnight to protect the wicket from the forecast overnight deluge with amber warnings for rain. However the best efforts of the club had been thwarted by individuals who had walked on the covers, betrayed by their muddy footprints. The result was to damage the covers and allow water onto the wicket.

The start of the game was delayed by an hour. Rye lost the toss and were invited to bat on a wet wicket and overcast conditions. In conditions favouring the bowlers, Rye hung on for 27.2 overs for 45 all out. The ball was either lifting over the batsmen’s heads or endangering their toes. In reply, Glynde clawed their way to 46 in 17.5 overs, despite Craig Pierce’s 2-23 who continually beat the bat.

This Saturday the 1sts travel to play Cuckfield 2nds, the 2nds host Eastbourne 3rds in a match sponsored by the Mermaid Inn, and the 3rds host Battle 2nds at Icklesham in a match between the top two sides in Division 12.

Next week is Cricket Week at Rye Cricket Club which is sponsored by Bournes Moves, for which the club is very grateful. On Sunday the visitors to the Salts are Clive Vale (2pm), on Monday we welcome “The Missing Bail” (2pm), a Dutch touring team who last visited in 1985. On Tuesday, the MCC are the visitors with the game starting at 11.30am. We still have 5 lunch tickets available, £25 for a 2 course meal wit wine. Then on Wednesday, Newenden are the visitors at 2pm.
