Summer is a wonderful time of abundance in the garden – Rye Community Garden not only looks fabulous with lush growth everywhere it is also bountiful with masses of fruit and vegetables. It seems even more lovely when you realise everything about this garden is purely voluntary and regular working parties on Saturdays and Wednesdays meet there to grow food and donate to Rye Foodbank. A generous community gesture.

At present a simple visit to the garden will reveal a late summer lushness with grasses and bushes spreading over the paths, see through veils of golden oat grass and tall feathery grasses giving a wispy relaxed effect. The garden is open to visit all the time and there is shade and seats to rest and enjoy a quiet moment.

Welcome to the garden

The gardening team are heroic and dedicated to a largish plot, all year round, that at times must be hard work. Regular watering has been a feature this summer, as it has been everywhere. The raised beds have made planting easier and keep tender shoots for all sorts of vegetables from being eaten by rabbits. A walk round the garden at any time will reveal delightful surprises of all sorts and also reveal a casual beauty.

Rye Foodbank deeply appreciates the donations of fresh produce received in summer. As clients visit the foodbank they are welcomed and provided with non-perishable food packed to provide three meals per day per member of the household. Some visit to consult with in-house advisors on benefits and other issues that expert advice can help with. Before clients leave they are offered fresh produce from the tables at the back, laden with harvested fresh food. It is an uplifting sight to see for anyone struggling for any reason.

During this year demand on Rye Foodbank remains consistent at around 100 people per week. Huge thank you to all foodbank benefactors.

If you or anyone you know is in need of support for any reason please do contact us or come and visit. We are open every Wednesday from 12:00 until 2:00 pm. The foodbank phone number is 07526 349847, email ryefoodbank@gmail.com or visit the website here.
