The yew tree sapling planted to replace the much-loved Lebanese cedar in the middle of Rye Cemetery has apparently been attacked by rabbits and its future hangs in the balance. The previous tree was felled in 2023 after it was found to be diseased and said to pose a risk from falling branches or the tree toppling over.
Rother District Council (RDC) was informed of the problem on Tuesday 14 April and it is hoped staff will be dispatched to erect some form of barrier around the trunk to prevent further damage. However, it’s unclear if the amount of bark already removed by the animals is enough to kill the 8-foot tree or whether it will be able to survive.
RDC’s cemeteries officer, Rosanna Searle said a new tree may be required if the damage is too serious.
Rabbits are known to pose a serious problem at Rye Cemetery, attacking saplings and small trees.
