Also elected

There are two other results from last week’s local elections on 7 May.

Riley Lee was elected to the vacant post on Northiam Parish Council with 555 votes, beating Dean Johnson who received 385. There was a 53% turnout.

Derek Greenup was elected unopposed to Fairlight Parish Council.

First job

Rye Mayor Chris Hoggart with Rye Repair Cafe team

The newly-appointed Mayor of Rye, Councillor Chris Hoggart, attended his first Rye event on Saturday 9 May at Rye Repair Cafe which is celebrating two years of mending things.

He said, “It is great to be here at the Repair Cafe. It is a fantastic opportunity for people to get things repaired by experts and also to come and have a cup of tea and meet people. It is a brilliant community effort with a fantastic community spirit.”

Increased fares

Rother District Council’s Licensing Committee is looking at increasing the charges set for Rye’s taxis by 10% next week.

The meeting on Wednesday 20 May will decide whether to start consultation on the rise for Hackney Carriage vehicles, with the increase coming into effect in October. The fares were last increased in 2023.

Theft

Sussex Police crest

Sussex Police are investigating after the theft of a moped from Cooper Road in Rye. It was stolen between 4pm and just after midnight on Thursday 30 May.

The moped was recovered next day in Kent.

Rye on TV

The Mermaid Inn

The Mermaid Inn was featured on the Channel 4 programme World’s Most Secret Hotels last week. The show featured the hotel’s famous ghost stories and included an interview with owner Judith Blincow.
