The first cyclists to benefit from new, secure bike lockers in Rye hospitality businesses arrived at Magnolia House last week. The bike lockers have been provided at a generous discount thanks to fundraising by Sussex Greenways.
“They were a pair of cyclists from Belgium doing a cycling tour across Kent, having ridden down from Canterbury and onwards to Folkestone for their ferry home,” said Javed Khan of Magnolia House. “They were very impressed.”
Javed has added a pair of 13 amp sockets and USB outlets inside the locker. “We’re seeing a lot more guests with e-bikes and I’ve been told it’s an insurance requirement that such bikes are securely stored,” he added.
The 6ft x 6ft lockers, which hold four bikes, have also been provided for River Haven Hotel and Jeake’s House.
Diana Taylor-Turner, manager at the River Haven said, “The bike shed project has been incredibly helpful for the River Haven Hotel. We are now able to offer visiting cycling guests a safe place to leave their often expensive equipment at a fraction of the original cost. Nick and his team have been fantastic with communication and even came and built the shed for us.”
“Our vision is for Rye to be a central hub for sustainable tourism in Rye Bay and the wider area,” said Nick Hanna of Sussex Greenways. “Secure bike storage encourages favourable reviews and repeat visits.”

Sussex Greenways has a fundraiser coming up. It’s great to see the new bike lockers up and running. This should help boost active travel and sustainable tourism in Rye, making Rye an even more attractive destination for people arriving with bikes, or looking to hire bikes during their stay.

Great to see bike lockers.Road Safety is also an issue.Safe passage around Rye is a must.
Only today near crash as three bikes flew down from the Landgate ,against the one way system on to the roundabout opposite the waterworks pub, at the junction next to Jempsons cafe then turned right against the traffic heading for the crossing gates ,presumably trying to join up with the cycle path.Utter folly

James Fuggle who can blame them when the National Cycle Route in Rye goes up a set of stairs – literally. Utter folly, indeed.
Whilst the National Cycle Route may be flawed to suggest that cyclists behaving in such an irresponsible way are blameless is equally flawed. The Highway Code was written for ALL road users ! Cycling against one way systems is reckless and should not be excused
I read somewhere that the cycle track to Camber was so busy with pedestrians that the hire bikes couldn’t use it and subsequently their business suffered a down turn.
One man’s gain is another man’s loss.
Nobody minds cyclists sharing our paths with us,because of our antiquated road structure,it’s the speed some travel at,that are pedestrians main concern.
My point was that due to the poor cycleway ,risks were taken ,but that does not exclude riding without thought.
