There is a chance to see Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet this summer at both Three Oaks and Rye. Bowler Crab is touring the area this summer with its 38th Shakespeare production to date, with shows outside at Hall House Farm in Three Oaks and inside at The Mermaid Inn in Rye.

Artistic Director, Stephen John said, “The cast and crew of this production are just wonderful to work with – incredible young performers straight out of training at RADA and other renowned institutions. We’ve got an incredible musician as well who plays violin live with original scores to really bring Verona to life. I directed this title in 2014, 2018 and 2019 and this year I’ve had the pleasure of taking some of the more ambitious designs and ideas from the past and putting them better into practice.”

He said the latest production has a magical feel. “We’ve really leant into the folklore and fairy tale elements associated with the text. Magic potions, influential fatal gods and prophecy all are utilised fully in a musical tale of love, brutality and laughter. I say laughter because, in terms of tone, it’s not all blood and lightning – it reads like a comedy for the most part and we have not shied away from that framework in our performance.”

Ethan Bareham (Romeo) and Evie Depledge (Juliet)

This production has been cut down to approximately 2hr 25m (excluding the interval) and features Shakespeare’s original Elizabethan writing style and language.

Half House Farm in Three Oaks outdoors performances are 13 and 14 June, 18 and 19 July, and 8 and 9 August, all at 3pm.

The Mermaid Inn performances take place on 5 July and 2 August indoors at 3pm.
