Organisers of the iconic Rye Ancient Trails 30k and 15k are calling on local residents to be part of one of East Sussex’s most picturesque and rewarding sporting events on Sunday 13 September.
The annual trail race draws hundreds of runners to Rye and surrounding countryside. Taking in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the multi-terrain course links the historic Norman churches of Rye, Iden, Beckley, Northiam and Peasmarsh.
However, event organisers stress that this vibrant community highlight simply cannot happen without the dedicated help of local volunteers.
The event raises vital funds for local causes across the area. The primary charity partner for 2026 is The Oliver Curd Trust, which provides free holiday accommodation for families affected by childhood cancer and life-limiting conditions. Additional local groups benefiting from the event include the Hastings Lions and the Marine Cadets. Volunteers are a big part of the day, from the Girl Guides serving tea and cake at the finish line to the marshals cheering along the route,.

Organisers are currently seeking volunteer course marshals to help guide runners safely, direct traffic at key points and keep energy levels high with enthusiastic support.
No experience is needed as full guidance will be given. There are short flexible shifts, typically lasting just two to three hours, with start times staggered between 9am and 11am around the route.
Every volunteer will receive a £35 race voucher credit (valid toward any future Nice Work event), a pair of exclusive event-branded socks, and the chance to be part of the vibrant race day atmosphere, with plenty of gratitude from runners and organisers alike.
“The Rye Ancient Trails course spans a wide area through our local villages,” said Susie Roberts, race officer and planning manager for organisers Nice Work, based on Rye Harbour Road. “Our marshals are the lifeblood of the event – they keep runners safe, motivated and smiling. We’d love to welcome you to the team.”
