This is my personal reflection on this year’s Rye Flower and Veg Show.
Thanks to Lorna Hall and Helena Hudd and their team, for putting on a fabulous show each year. It must take lots of your time.
Thanks also to all of those who enter the various classes. The flowers, vegetables, fruits, cakes and bakes, photographs, crafts and artwork, were so impressive.
This year’s personal highlight was the opportunity to display one of the many, magnificent cucumbers that grew outdoors in our garden. My exhibited cucumber drew much attention and several comments.
For added impact, I mounted the cucumber on a cut-down egg box. One attendee said that it looked like “a Soviet missile on a transporter”. Helena reminded me that the Red Square military parade was cancelled this year and suggested maybe that’s why one could make an appearance in Rye.
As you can see in the feature image, I mounted the “missile” against a backdrop of Red Square in Moscow. The Red Star is courtesy of our granddaughter’s book of stickers!
This photograph proves that the missile grew in Rye. For the record, the displayed, winning cucumber was 440mm long and weighed 961 grams.
