Anyone strolling round Rye last Saturday night 12 September might have been mistaken into thinking they’d been transported to the Wild West, as the community centre in Conduit Hill was transformed for the Harvest Hoedown, complete with hay bale seating and bunting.
The event, hosted by Wine and Food Fair, was very well attended; in fact it was packed to the rafters.
An abundance of check shirts, cowboy boots, prairie style dresses and stetsons were proudly styled by those gathered for a proper night of barn dance fun, music and dancing.
The dance floor was packed from start to finish, with lively numbers performed, along with very good instructions (for each dance) given by the brilliant Cut A Shine.
Rye’s Human Fruit Machine was up and running on its inaugural outing, for punters to have a go at matching actual pieces of fruit, selected at random by the human reels who did a sterling job. There were even boobie prizes for anyone who didn’t get 3 bananas!
The bar did a roaring trade, despite the lack of moonshine, and the food, by Pro-Pizza, was amazing! Jacob is the head chef at Wingrove House, Alfriston, and along with Maija, they do catering at events in their spare time.
Although there were no pizzas on offer, as Hoedown organiser, Jane Brook, wanted “something different”. The chicken curry was cracking, and the burgers were banging! Everything had been made from scratch and tasted fantastic!
The food was off the chart!
All in all, it was a brilliant night out, huge congratulations (and thanks) to the organisers, volunteers, and everyone who went along.
