Civil Service STEM challenge for college

Last week on Thursday, February 22 students from Rye College in year 9 Rye Advance Students group took part in a STEM workshop day. STEM activities challenge students to find design and build solutions to problems using a combination of science, technology, engineering, and maths skills, hence STEM Learning.

Rye College is participating in the Civil Service STEM Challenge 2024 – an exciting national competition – in which students are asked to use their creativity and scientific knowledge to solve global challenges. Entries will be judged by a panel of leaders from across the government and prizes will be awarded to the groups with the best solutions.

The college explained: “This year’s challenge is focused on ‘A vision of a carbon neutral day in 2050’. We were super-impressed by our students’ approach – so many great ideas, strategic thinking, brilliant team-work and collaboration. We’re excited to receive the panel’s feedback later in the year.”

The STEM website outlines the reasons why STEM activities are so beneficial to students at the college:

“Lessons in STEM subjects with well-designed curricula will naturally present numerous opportunities for students to develop relevant skills in practical work and in problem-solving. These are the pillars on which STEM education is built, so it’s important to provide students with the option to take this further; to challenge themselves to use and develop these skills outside lessons.

“Student work and contributions during lessons are valued, of course – but the additional prestige that can come with recognition from an external organisation is hard to replicate through other means.”
