A source of joy and discovery

To celebrate the launch of the Rye Society of Artists’ (RSA) new website, Rye News continues to profile one of their artists each week – including links to their website and social media accounts so you can keep up-to-date on their activities.

You will also be able to view some of the RSA member’s work at their 70th anniversary summer show later in 2021, date to be confirmed.

This week, the artist in focus is Shirley Spottiswoode.

Born in Rye at Cadborough Farm in 1933, Shirley spent much of her wartime childhood there with views of Camber Castle, Rye, Winchelsea and Dungeness.

She attended Hastings Art School when lovely Vincent Lines gave every encouragement. Later, she taught art and crafts to children. Teaching is the best way of learning, in Shirley’s opinion.

Printmaking is a recent source of joy and discovery.

You can see more of Shirley’s work on her Instagram @spottiswoode.art, on her website www.shirleyspottiswoode.com and the RSA website.
