On Saturday, April 5 the launch of Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day took place at the Mermaid Inn. How appropriate – and what a fantastic turnout there was from locals who want to get involved. The meeting was to generate interest for local companies to come forward and support this venture and offer sponsorship. Also they wanted to see who was interested in getting involved in the activities.

Matt Summerfield, Gary and Zoe Britton are involved in the pirate scene locally and they  are raising their colours over Rye and launching the Rye Pirates and Smugglers Day on Saturday, August 9, a day to celebrate the town’s heritage.

There was an interesting mix of attendees who came along to find out more including Simon Parsons from the Heritage Centre, Stephen Masters from Rye Castle Museum, mayor Andy Stuart and mayoress Niki Stuart, Martin and Kt Bruce photographers and videographers and Rye Harbour Herrings shanty singers, Isabel Ryan, and photographer Simon Curtis.

There are plans for town crier, Paul Goring to lead some historic walks on the day, with children’s entertainment and a treasure hunt.

Zoe explained: “We are looking for sponsorship and support to enable the day to go ahead, so please do spread the word and get involved.

“We need this for most of the events including a children’s treasure hunt; printing; best-dressed shop competition award; best children’s pirate competition; advertising; photography; children’s entertainment and more. Follow us on socials for updates!”

You can email general@arracangroup.co.uk for details on how you get can involved in sponsorship.
