This time, we’re sending you a bumper list of forthcoming films at the Film Club, offering humour, pathos and everything in between. Don’t forget this Friday’s film, on November 4, THE ROAD DANCE, which promises to be a great story, but remember the box of Kleenex when watching it!
Friday November 4 – THE ROAD DANCE (2021 – 116 minutes) (cert. 15) A young girl lives in the Outer Hebrides in a small village in the years just before WWI. Isolated and hard by the shore, her life takes a dramatic change when a terrible tragedy befalls her. According to one rave review: “This was simply superb…the lead actress was awesome…a difficult watch in places…everyone should watch it…a hidden gem.” (7pm start, doors 6:30)
Friday December 2 – FISHERMAN’S FRIENDS – ONE AND ALL (2022 – 125 minutes) (cert 12a) Following the unexpected success of the band’s debut album “No Hopers, Jokers and Rogues”, we re-join them almost a year later, struggling with the pressures, pitfalls and temptations of their newfound fame, second album syndrome, and performing on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury. Friday January 6 – WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING (2022 – 99 minutes) (cert. 15) A woman who raised herself in the marshes of the Deep South becomes a suspect in the murder of a man with whom she was once involved. Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, whom we met previously in the phenomenally successful Irish TV drama ‘Normal People’. (7pm start, doors 6:30)
Friday February 3 – FAMILY ROMANCE (2019 Japanese film – 89 minutes)(cert. 12a) Love is a business at Family Romance: a company that offers a substitute rental service, when founder Yuichi Ishii helps fulfil the dreams of his clients. As Mahiro’s mother hires Ishii to impersonate her missing father, reality begins to blur. (with English sub-titles) (7pm start, doors 6.30)
Friday March 3 – EMILY (BRONTE) (2022 130 minutes)( cert 15) This intriguing film imagines the transformative, exhilarating, and uplifting journey to womanhood of a rebel and a misfit, one of the world’s most famous, enigmatic, and provocative writers who died too soon at the age of 30. Features Emma Mackey who starred in the extremely successful Netflix series Sex Education. (7pm start, doors 6:30)
Friday April 7 – GOOD LUCK TO YOU LEO GRANDE (2022 – 97 minutes)(cert. 15) Two-time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson embodies the candour and apprehension of retired teacher Nancy Stokes, and newcomer Daryl McCormack (Peaky Blinders) personifies the charisma and compassion of sex worker Leo Grande. Friday May 5 – THE LOST KING (2022 – 108 minutes) (cert. 12) In 2012, having been lost for over 500 years, the remains of King Richard III were discovered beneath a Leicester car park. The search had been orchestrated by amateur historian, Philippa Langley (Sally Hawkins), whose unrelenting research had been met with incomprehension by her friends and family and with scepticism by experts and academics. THE LOST KING is the true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history.
