Jempo pulls it off!

A couple of weeks ago, in this paper, I was extolling the virtue and convenience of our wonderful Kino and all its works, most particularly its very spoiling live streaming of glorious ballet and opera for all of us locally.

However, on this last Saturday 29 November the West End and the Royal Opera House came here to us!

How spoiling.

A fabulous evening of opera classics and favourites managed for us by Oliver Gooch on the piano and sung to us by four young emergent top class singers in the unparalleled beauty of Winchelsea church.

The programme included lovely pieces by a whole range of our favourite composers including Verdi, Bizet, Gounod, Saint-Saens, Massanet, Offenbach, Rossini, Ponchielli, Cardillo, Velazquez, Lehar and Cardillo.

Opera in Winchelsea church

It was all organised for the 16th year in succession in aid of Rye Tennis Club by Jonathan Jempson, maestro and great opera fan!

All those superannuated fur coats made an appearance (was that a slight whiff of camphor assailing my nostrils?) along with the shy family jewels, bedecking all the local opera fans who made the pilgrimage, and worth every moment away from their roaring fire or their television.

Well-chosen pieces sung with such brio in the perfect acoustics of the church, helped along by unlimited red and white wine. Such a treat, and roll on next year.

Well done again, Jempo.
