Showing at Rye Community Centre Film Club on Friday November 6 – Suite Francaise (2014 – 107 minutes)  Set in a French village in occupied France in 1940, this is the story of a beautiful young French woman, Lucille (Michelle Williams), who finds herself trapped in a stifling existence with her controlling mother-in-law, the forbidding Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas) as they wait for news of Lucille’s husband, a prisoner of war. As she finds herself drawn towards a cultured young German soldier, Bruno (Matthias Schoenaerts).  But, as we know by now, the course of true, or any other kind of cinematic love, rarely runs smooth . . .  (7pm start, 6:30 doors).

Suffragette [12A] 106 mins . Inspired by true events, Suffragette is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children and even their lives. The stirring story centres on Maud, a working wife and mother whose life is changed forever when she secretly joins the growing suffragette movement. Galvanised by Emmeline Pankhurst, Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life, engaging in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep lead the cast of this powerful film directed by BAFTA award winner Sarah Gavron from an original screenplay by Abi Morgan. Also starring Ben Whishaw, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Romola Garai.

Spectre [12A] 150 mins.  007’s back!  A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre. Starring Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, David Bautista, Monica Bellucci and Ralph Fiennes as M.

The Lobster [15] 118 mins  Winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes Film Festival 2015, Yorgos Lanthimos’s (Dogtooth) twisted black comedy envisions a dystopian society that cannot tolerate unattached adults. When his relationship breaks down, David is incarcerated in a seaside hotel with 45 days to find a mate or he will be turned in to an animal of his choice and released into the wild… Lanthimos’s debut English-language film segues from darkly comic satire to an unconventional love story. Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux and Ben Whishaw.

The Program [15] 103 mins   Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) directs the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history; Lance Armstrong. Following a gruelling battle with cancer, Lance returned to his cycling career in 1999 more determined than ever on winning the Tour de France. However not everyone believed the fairytale and journalist David Walsh, at first charmed by Lance’s charisma and talent, soon began to question whether the ‘world’s greatest athlete’ was ‘clean’. Walsh sought to unveil the truth risking his own career and costing his paper, The Sunday Times, hundreds of thousands in legal costs. But the indefatigable Walsh eventually uncovered the truth when a select few prepared to talk came forward, exposing one of the greatest deceptions of our time. Starring Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet and Jesse Plemons.

Hotel Transylvania 2 [U] 89 mins. The Drac pack is back for an all-new monster comedy adventure. Everything seems to be changing for the better at Hotel Transylvania. Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable half-human, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So Drac enlists his friends to put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp. But little do they know that Drac’s grumpy dad Vlad is about to pay a family visit to the hotel. And when Vlad finds out that his great-grandson is not a pure blood – and humans are now welcome at Hotel Transylvania – things are going to get batty! With the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez and Steve Buscemi.

Of Mice and Men [12A]  Thursday November 19  at 7pm.  The hit Broadway production filmed on stage in New York by National Theatre Live starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd. This landmark revival of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s play is a powerful portrait of the American spirit and a heart-breaking testament to the bonds of friendship. Directed by Anna D  Shapiro (Broadway’s August: Osage County), also starring Leighton Meester and Jim Norton.  Booking at Rye Kino from 11am on Friday October 23.  Running time approximately 140 minutes.

Four short ballets  LIVE: Thursday November 12 at 7:15pm Enjoy four short ballets in one evening with this quadruple program from The Royal Ballet. Carlos Acosta focuses on the dramatic essentials of love, jealousy and revenge in his new production of Carmen; Liam Scarlett has used Lowell Liebermann’s thrilling Piano Concerto No.1 as the inspiration for his similarly audacious choreography in Viscera; Debussy’s evocative score is the inspiration for Jerome Robbins’s Afternoon of a Faun; George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky pas de deux uses a fragment of music composed for the 1877 production of Swan Lake for an eight-minute display of ballet bravura and technique. The programme stars Marianella Nunez, Carlos Acosta, Federico Bonelli, Laura Morera, Ryoichi Hirano, Sarah Lamb, Natalia Osipova and Steven McRae.

The Winter’s Tale [12A]  LIVE: Thursday  November 26 at 7:15pm  ENCORE: Sunday  November 29 at 2:15pm  The first season of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live promises an exceptional series of plays broadcast to cinemas from London’s Garrick Theatre over the course of a year. Shakespeare’s timeless tragicomedy of obsession and redemption is reimagined in a new production co-directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, following their triumphant staging of Macbeth in Manchester and Manhattan. Starring Judi Dench as Paulina, Tom Bateman, Jessie Buckley, Hadley Fraser, Miranda Raison and Kenneth Branagh as Leontes.  Running time approximately 210 minutes.

The Mikado  LIVE: Thursday December 3  at 7.30pm  English National Opera’s spectacular production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado is a popular hit with audiences of all ages. Experience the irresistible combination of wonderful wit, memorable melodies and hilarious antics in this acclaimed production from Jonathan Miller. Distinguished bass Robert Lloyd sings the role of the Mikado with Richard Suart as Ko-Ko and Mary Bevan and Anthony Gregory as the lovers Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo.
