Rye Art Gallery’s biennial print exhibition, The Art of British Printmaking, is open now until 2 August including etchings, woodcuts, linocuts, lithographs and silk screen prints by invited artists. There are over 150 prints for sale, both framed and unframed, at affordable prices. Artists featured include Hazel Brook, Nick Archer, Davida Smith, Richard Bawden, Cedric Horner, Tessa Holmes, Robert Greenhalf, Charlie Shearer and Michael White to name just a few.

Alongside are works from the permanent collection, giving visitors to the gallery a glimpse of the richness and importance of the gallery’s permanent collection. Many may well be surprised to discover that it contains works by some of the country’s best printmakers: Margaret Barnard, Cedric Horner, Paul Nash, Edward Bawden, Frank Short, Piranesi, Graham Sutherland, John Piper, LS Lowry and Edward Burra.

The first room features work by master etcher, Norman Ackroyd CBE RA (1936-2024). His prints depict, through shifting tones of black and grey, dramatic coastlines with rocky cliffs, turbulent seas, moody skies and birds battling the wind and rain.
