Peacocks in Rye

Peacock on the Kino roof

Thomas Peacocke founded Rye’s Grammar School in 1636, but the latest peacock to set foot in Rye was somewhat surprising. We are used to seagulls, starlings, jackdaws and herons, even the occasional sparrowhawk and hen harrier – but peacocks? No. Far too exotic. Until a week or so ago when, one evening while drawing the curtains there appeared on the roof of the Kino not one, but two peacocks. They wandered down the roof and vanished.

Where were they from? What did they want? Where did they go? They were not ghosts, as this quick snapshot of one of them proves. Will they return?
