Fixing the Station Approach toilets

Proposals to renovate or replace the Station Approach toilets were discussed at Rye Town Council’s meeting on Monday 11 May. Councillors heard making any new facility pay to use would be part of the plans.

“They are such an important facility for Rye,” said Rebekah Gilbert, one of the project team putting together a feasibility study into the toilets’ future. “Bus drivers, taxi drivers, visitors and locals all rely on it.”

The building could be refurbished or replaced. One of the options being explored is to knock the current building down and replace it with a two storey facility with money-making office space on the first floor.

The Station Approach toilets are owned by Network Rail and run by Rother District Council – both have been involved in the discussions.

Plans are also being explored for external funding for renovations and maintenance, including Community Infrastructure Levy money. “We are exploring every option,” said Rebekah Gilbert, “but making them pay-to-use is the only way we will make it work.”

Councillors unanimously agreed to proceed further with the proposals.

Monday’s meeting, the first to be chaired by new Mayor Chris Hoggart, also discussed the continuing back and forth between Rye and Rother District Council over area plans and potential new housing numbers.
