A false alarm triggered the release of firefighting foam at the Tradebe plant on Rye Harbour Road on Wednesday September 24. Large amounts of the foam were seen in the factory entrance and outside the gates on the main road.

Tradebe plant on Rye Harbour Road

A spokesperson for Tradebe explained what happened. “There was an unexpected release of firefighting foam on the Lime Kiln Works site. The release was caused by a false fire alarm triggering our fire safety equipment to come into operation and accidently releasing some foam. The foam, which is made up of 97% water and 3% firefighting foam was quickly cleaned up from the site and its boundary. All clean up procedures and disposal assessments have been conducted liaising openly and directly with the Environment Agency.”

Refused

Land at Cadborough Gate

Planning permission has been refused for two homes at Cadborough Gate on Udimore Road, next to the Valley Park roundabout in Rye.

In a decision posted on Tuesday September 30, Rother District Council planners decided the proposals would make too much of an impact on the local area. “Whilst the overall effect would be localised, the proposed development of two dwellings would very obviously extend beyond the defined edge of the town and be a very noticeable suburban intrusion into the countryside on this undeveloped side of Udimore Road. The proposal would cause harm to the character and appearance of the area.”

Planning permission at the same site has also been refused for homes in recent years, along with proposals for a BP petrol station.

Looking to the future

Welcoming families to Rye College

Rye College welcomed a record number of prospective families to its Open Evening 2025 on Wednesday September 24 in what was described as “an actioned-packed event that showcased the school’s commitment to life-transforming learning and its vibrant, supportive community.”

Guests were met by staff and students and had a chance to look at the newly refurbished science labs, food technology rooms, engineering spaces, and computer suites.

A spokesperson for Rye College said the school continued to grow. “With our current Year 7 cohort now full, more families than ever are choosing our school for its values, vision, and learning environment. We look forward to welcoming another strong intake for 2026/27 and continuing our journey of creating bright futures for all.”
